Keeping the maintenance up on your house is essential if you decide to reduce your homeowner’s insurance policy as you will be responsible for your guests’ health and safety. You make sure your valuables are locked up safely, and you buy security systems, stronger doors, locks, and windows to protect your home from theft. You even opt for a cuddly kitten rather than a large dog in order to protect visitors from attacks.

During winter it can be a difficult time to avoid damage to your home without homeowner’s insurance. Winter weather conditions can cause some of the most damage to your home, as well as you, your family, and your visitors, and the best way to protect your home and everyone in and around it is to practice prevention, i.e., make necessary repairs before winter strikes, and take precautionary measures after winter strikes.

Work from the top of your home downwards when preparing for winter. You can use a gutter cover to stop any leaves or branches from falling into the gutter and blocking it which can also lead to cracks in the ice, just make sure you have fully cleaned it out before putting the cover on. Then take a look at the walk way and steps that lead to your home. Cracks in the concrete, unsecure hand rails and any wobbly stones should all be secured. If you do not have a handrail leading to your home you should probably get one for when the family comes over for Christmas or the postman struggles to get up an icy slope. Look at the outside walls of your home and around the windows. If there is damage or holes here fill them in.

Next move into your home. Keep drafts out of the home by sealing any cracks near windows and doors, bulk out your thermal insulation materials in the home and check that your central heating is working. You will be less likely to need homeowner’s insurance if you do this work on your house before winter and will not have to pay as much for cover so you will have more money for presents and parties.
